JUNE 2008 W2 ALERT Electrical Contractors Have Plugged into Low Voltage, says Electrical Contractor MagazineECs are installing security, home automation, home theater, audio & more<June 12, 2008>According to an estimate from Electrical Contractor magazine and its supplement Security+Life Safety Systems magazine, 75% of electrical contractors have diversified their businesses into a broad range of low voltage products including home automation, home theater, audio, security, and home controls. The magazines are published by the National Electrical Contractors Association, and they report the following technology trends being offered by electrical contractors:
• Lighting: including whole house lighting control
• Alarm systems: including wireless intrusion detection
• Access control: including digital keypads, wireless key fobs, and remote door locking
• Intrusion control panels: including detection of gas leaks and fires, crimes and medical emergencies, expanded systems as large as 32 zones including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
• Cameras: including video door phones, CCTV systems that capture images to be saved to a hard drive for download by police
• Whole house automation: with systems including home theater, audio installation, fire/life safety and security, and other controls.
• Motion, door and window sensors that automatically raise the alarm; homeowners can be notified by text message on any cell phone or pager
• Home Security monitoring and notification services offering remote monitoring and mobile access to real-time video
Pointing out that new technologies have expanded options for consumers, Dan Bollin, president of TranStar Security and Technologies says, “You can have cameras installed and monitor them away from home through the Internet.” |
