MAY 2008 BEACON Flat Panel Battle Samsung Tops in LCD TV Share in N. America; Vizio Displaces Sony for #2 in Flat Panel Overall <May 7, 2008>In the never ending battle for domination of the flat panel TV business, DisplaySearch has released new data for the first quarter of 2008 with some surprising results. Most notably, Vizio, showing triple digit year-over-year growth, scores big taking third place in LCD share and displacing Sony for second place in overall flat panel market share (combining LCD and Plasma).
How close is the battle? See the chart included with this report. The top three brands in LCD TV are Samsung (who displaced Sony who held this position in the fourth quarter of last year)/Sony/Vizio with respective market shares of 12.8%/12.7%/12.5%. All within a hair of each other’s position! Sharp holds fourth place with 8.8% of the market.
Less competitive than LCD, the plasma grouping is a little more definitive with the top three brands being Panasonic/LGE/Samsung. The respective market shares of the top three were 32.8%/19.2%/18.4%.
LG Electronics showed good year-over-year growth of 59%, while Samsungs plasma business declined 4%. Overall the plasma group declined 9% vs. last year. The LCD group grew a respectable 59% and overall flat panel combined to show 46% growth vs. last year. |
